Connecting with Civility

Strangely enough, 10/3/2015, the 276th day of 2015, was another Saturday where there was no soccer, no activities.  Last week it was the Pope and, this weekend it was the hurricane that wasn't (but DID bring a lot of rain).  So we caught up on errands, work (I have a lot of it), and College Football on TV.  And I spent a bit of time on FB, discussing, with my friends and their friends, issues facing society today.  Mainly in regard to the shooting at UCC on Oregon, but also Planned Parenthood and voter disenfranchisement.  And what I realized is, we will always have hard issues facing us.  We will not always agree on these issues.  BUT, what we CAN agree on, is that we will connect and discuss them civilly.  In the face of some pretty hateful comments, I think I stayed the course and respectfully disagreed and showed data for my viewpoints.  This led some folks to disengage, and that is a shame, because when we are disconnected in our disagreements, there can be no progress.  But, in a few cases, differing viewpoints were given the respect they deserved from both sides of the arguments.  Did we agree in the end.  No, probably not, but the civil connection and discourse hopefully helped us grow.  Would that this also be true on the national (and international) political stage.
